A short five-minute clip from "Ishi's Legacy" on California Native history. Starvation and the threat of outright slaughter forced the California Modoc Indians onto a federal reservation. Negligence on the part of white leaders would force them off it again in 1872. When Modoc chief Kintpuash (Captain Jack) led his people off the Klamath Reservation in Oregon to return to their homeland in California, federal troops under the leadership of General Edward Canby were ordered to apprehend the Modocs. What resulted is the so-called "Modoc War," in which less than one-hundred California Indians successfully outlasted eight hundred federal troops for more than four months. Produced and edited by Ciaran M. Vejby
People in this country should truly be ashamed of their history, in the way that the indigenous peoples have been historically been treated.
