@lathandien also,but slavic was predominant....elfs, dwarfs, you have all that in slavic mythology not norse,besides that he used slavic names (Boromir,Faramir...)!! but all together its all mixed in middle world !

@perstyr most of the Tolkien`s imaginarium came from the Slavic mythology not german

@kikiyoinuyasha He based the elvish races on several races and cultures in history. For example Sindarin bears very close resemblance to Welsh as do their looks, his 'Luthien' was a lady he fell in love with and his wife from North Wales. One race of Elves was linguistically based on the Icelandic people I think. I could be wrong though lol

To be fair, they are Tolkien's perfect race, so germans may well like to associate themselves with them.
