ANCHOR:
It's been one month since cyclone Nargis struck Burma. Monks are finally able to perform their traditional Buddhist funeral ceremonies for the victims in one village.
STORY:
Cyclone Nargis left 134,000 dead or missing in Burma.
In Buddhist tradition, people make gifts and pray seven days after the death of their relatives. The purpose of the ceremony is to release the soul of the dead so that it can choose the path of their next life.
In Yeway, a village of 1700 people, approximately two thirds of the population were killed in the cyclone. The victims included all but one of the
village's monks.
According to the Norway-based Democratic Voice of Burma opposition group (DVB), almost all 350 homes were flattened. The small village temple was also destroyed.
The DVB says no aid, either from Burma's leadership or from international relief agencies, has reached the village.
It was only possible late last Sunday for the traditional funeral service to be carried out.
Two volunteer monks from a neighboring community were said to have
made their way to a makeshift tent erected to act as a temporary temple and
helped to perform the service for the dead, one month after the disaster
struck.
The survivors made meager offerings of rice and money, collected in a
bowl placed on the floor.
