this was actually the first kirk douglas movie i ever saw.i watched it as a kid in the 70's.great film with a great cast.you have to love douglas in this film and you feel sorry anthony quinn.earl holiman was good as quinn's son. john sturges was one of the best at directing westerns along with john ford and sam peckinpaugh.

The music is selling a much lighter tone in this preview than was in the actual movie. The film was like the western version of a brutal crime drama. The closest to a film noir western I've seen. Sounds like Tiomkin who did score the actual movie very effectively.

this is one of my favorite westerns.saw it when i was a kid and loved it.the plot is great and so is the cast. you kind of feel bad for quinn's character and kirk douglas is at his best ,especially the scene where he's explaining how a man suffers while hanging to earl holiman.his face is so intense in the scene.also brad dexter from the magnificent 7 is in the film as quinn's right hand man.
