@ZoeyFlux If you kill a cow you can raise more on a farm. If you kill a whale it's gone forever. Whaling (and fishing in general) harms the ocean's ecosystem.

If you approach another vessel within 1 nautical mile in open ocean you are not a seaman, the master of the greenpeace ship should have his certificate of competency removed. There is no need to get so close to anything else in open ocean. Unless you are deliberately looking for a collision.

Internation Rule 17 Action by the Stand-on Vessel (assuming the Arctic Sunrise was had right of way and this was a crossing situation)
(c) A power-driven vessel which takes action in a crossing situation in accordace with subparagraph (a)(ii) of this Rule to avoid collision with anotehr power-driven vessel, shall, if the circumstances of the case admit, not alter course to port for a vessel on her own port side.
The Arctic Sunrise should have turned to startboard!
