In the 1969 San Jose Open, Johnny Guenther bowls perfection. He also wins the tournament later in the show.

Enjoy!

  • The car is probably worth 100 grand now, because of the history behind it

  • I want a new cougar

  • I read somewhere that in 1970 there were only 1000 300s bowled in sanctioned competition, could be wrong on the exact number. It would be nice to have a tournament or even a league where you were allowed to use 1 ball and set up lane conditions similar to the way they were in the old days, an alternative to sport bowling. I got to aggree with Darwin 40, Guenthers 300 was definitely earned and deserved since all the shots were accurate

  • @Darinw40 You speak the absolute truth. the purpose of a sport or game is to better the human being by developing skill and agility through technique and balance. When the participants role is diminished the game ceases to fulfill its purpose. Imagine golf greens that funnel to the cup. This is what the BPAA controlled USBC has done to bowling.

  • This was definitely earned, back in the days of rubber bowling balls and long oil...back in the days when your equipment did not make up for a pulled shot or a wide shot...you had to be perfect on your shot or it would not carry, an era where strokers ruled..with the equipment of today...all you got to do is throw the ball in an"area" of your target and the ball will do the rest...

  • My favorite words of commentary, the last said before the final ball: “There's nothing left to say, let’s just watch it.”

  • Back in the day there was a saying that there was no shame to lose to a 300 game. That's of course when they were very tough to get.

  • Yea. Back when scores meant something. I bowled an 800 a LONG time ago back when 650 series made the newspaper. Yea. Going back even further, in 1953 my dad bowled a 710 series in a 'late league'. That's back when ABC put out a small booklet at the end of the season that contained ALL 700's for the entire country for the season, with the names, city and bowling establishment....Oh, I ave. 200+ 3 houses, through the 80's 90's...my last 300 was in Apr. 06. I haven't bowled since....

  • Sportsmanship has gone out the freaking window. Unfortunately, the equipment has caused people to think that they are bowlers....thank goodness i was a kid and got to watch these old videos live.....got to learn the true fundamentals of bowling

  • Back in the days when a 300 game meant something. It doesn't mean much now because the coverstocks of today's balls and the lane conditions make it so much easier. Everybody and their brother throws a 300 now...ho hum. Notice how Guenther was mobbed by the other bowlers and tournament officials. The late, great Don Johnson, Guenther's opponent, headed for the approach as soon as Johnny threw the ball. When a Pro throw a 300 on TV today, he barely gets a handshake...like, so what?
