Laurel Park is open for the Fall! I grew up in Bowie, MD where the racetrack was part of the local culture and landscape. Dad would frequently go for the last three races on the card (free admission) and he taught me the basics of wagering (always box the exacta!). I remember my Driver's Ed instructor Mr. Smith pulling a carful of new teenage drivers over by the rail so he could see a race in the middle of the day.
Maryland horse racing is struggling these days, and whether you believe slot machines are the answer or not, I believe it's a tradition worth preseving in Maryland.
Go out and support live racing. I always enjoy it, and it beats wagering on a computer.

This is great! To me, Laurel Park is a small slice of heaven on earth. Like the guy says, lots of friendly, nice people. We live equidistant between Charles Town and Laurel and Laurel is our track! Maryland racing is REAL horse racing. I won't go to WV ever! Charles Town is a state fair track w/ no turf. I saw Barbaro at Laurel as a 2 yr old. The smell of the horses...the proud look in their eyes. Whoever closes this place down will have much to answer for in the hereafter.
