I haven't watched the whole saga of Act Raiser, but I'm certain that you can get more than 4 lives for the final battle. I actually found three sources of life (from Fillmore by giving a compass to them, Bloodpool by flooding the lake with rain and Northwall by striking the shrine) but still I think I missed one...

Ah, that's where I have heard those sounds before then. I guess I was thinking of Illusion of Gaia then. Either way, the sound effects and music are superb.

why and how do you have 4 lives!?

There are powerups you can find throughout the game that let you start with more lives and more magic points. If you get all of the life powerups, you start with 4 lives at the beginning of a stage.
I'm fairly certain that the max for magic points is 7, as well (as I have here), but for some reason, I seem to have 8 stuck in my head... double the max possible lives...

Why do some of the sounds in this game sound like they come from Super Castlevania. Or am I crazy when I say that....such as the one when you are hit by an enemy.

It shouldn't be Super Castlevania, the sounds are very similar to the games such as Illusion of Gaia (or Time, in the PAL version), Soul Blazer and Terranigma (all of which, along with Actraiser 1 and 2, were developed by Quintet and published by Enix).
