Aquarium Park
Part 1 of 3
Acts 1, 2, and 3

Welcome to Aquarium Park! While Sweet Mountain is the most bizarre of the places Sonic visits in this game, if you ask me, Aquarium Park is undeniably the most schizophrenic: It combines an undersea reef with feudal Japan, except that all of the temples, shrines, and other buildings are made of metal. One way I'd put it is that Aquarium Park is what a city would look like if it were inhabited by robotic amphibious samurai.

Aquarium Park is also frequently cited as being the first 3-D Sonic game to have water since Sonic Adventure 1, though this is only technically true: Every underwater portion in this game is in 2-D. The designers do a pretty good job of not calling itself out on that.

The stage design here, at least above-water, closely resembles the Dragon Road design in the 360/PS3 version of Sonic Unleashed, characterized by a lot of skimming over the water, some hilly and winding paths that Sonic can simply speed through, narrow corridors filled with enemies, and a love of foes that shoot homing missiles while Sonic's movements are restricted. Later stages will show even more similarities. The 2-D portions, on the other hand, pretty accurately resemble the sidescrollers on the 16-bit and 8-bit consoles who have been spiritually succeeded in the Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush games. (Well, there are some who would say otherwise, but I think they carry the spirit.) This is particularly true in their mazelike structure, though that's only evident in Act 1 in this video.

There are no new Wisps introduced here, unfortunately--you'll have to wait until the next Zone for that. However, we do get a new attribute of Wisps that aren't seen in any other Zone, which is the Yellow Drill as used underwater: While it operates the same way as digging through soil, the music is different. On top of that, Sonic will not drown, and he can just plow his way through every Badnik. (While I'm on the subject, a number of Badniks make their re-appearance here. In this video, you can spot Chopper, Mega Chopper, Crabmeat, and Jawz. Chopper and Crabmeat are from Sonic 1, and Mega Chopper and Jawz are from Sonic 3.) However, Jawz has been upgraded to also have the Drill ability; Sonic will lose his Rings if he collides with a drilling Jawz head-on, but Jawz will still get destroyed.

Just as with using the Drill underground, Sonic can go through special pipes. While you may have seen some in Tropical Resort and Sweet Mountain, Aquarium Park goes absolutely nuts with this. A lot of underwater portions, in fact, are divided into a number of chambers (and liberally sprinkled with Yellow Drills), giving them a mazelike structure. This is at its biggest in Act 4, which you'll see in the next video.

  • Those Jellyfish in the background in Some parts in this World kind of remind me of the movie "Ponyo".

  • IMMA FIRIN MA Sonic: LAZA!

  • @trainboy437 Yes, that's scheduled for after I finish with Game Land.

  • @Overhazard Is that after Game Land?

  • @Overhazard I think he's talking about what happens when you collect all the emeralds. Something that I really liked about the DS version over the Wii. Better closing to the story. Though it seemed last minuted, it really helped emphasise the tie to the ending. and I thought it was so beautiful too.

  • @nintendofan11198 The only real "secret" level is the special stages are exclusive to the DS version and getting all the emeralds rewards you with a hidden boss fight. I won't spoil it though.

  • @Overhazard i meant the ds version

  • @nintendofan11198 There aren't any secret levels. Everything you can play is right there on the World Map.

You'll probaly enjoy the Eggman PA montage I'll make once I'm done covering all of the stages.

  • @Overhazard no its just its too funny especially the sweet mountain bit and he said '' Please do refrain to lick the rides THEY BEEN SITTING ON THEM they been on their butts!!!'' lol that was my favourite part so i got the game on wii and should get it on ds cause it has the other wisps one is red burst and the other one is the violet void its pretty cool but there's a secret level? do you what it is

  • @nintendofan11198 Why's that? Do they get in the way of you playing the game?
