School Seismology Project - a national schools science project www.bgs.ac.uk/schoolseismology Based around a low-cost simple seismometer system, sensitive enough to detect earthquakes on the other side of the world. Training is available for teachers to use this equipment. On average three to four earthquakes will be detected each month. Students will be able to compare their data with data from other schools and professional monitoring stations internationally. There is a range of simple classroom activities to teach basic science concepts using earthquakes and seismology. Recording real data from earthquakes gives students a sense of ownership of the data and provides an immediate link to the relevance of science in society. The project has a built-in requirement to communicate the results of the project in school and the local area. The CPD training for science teachers enhances their geology subject knowledge
