An old love song from the singing of Lee Monroe Presnell, Beech Mt. North Carolina, recorded by Anne and Frank Warner. He was a wonderful singer. You can hear him on the two volume Anne and Frank Warner Collection on Appleseed Recordings. Jeff and Gerret Warner edited and wrote some great liner notes for these CDs which contain most of the best stuff their parents recorded over the years.
Anne Warner gave cassette copies of their field recordings to English folklorist Peter Kennedy and said he could dub them for people if they wanted. I was apparently the first person to ask when I visited Kennedy in Gloucester in 1989.
The only acoustic track on the 1996 Cordelia's Dad live CD "Roadkill" is a version of this song from a show somewhere in Germany in the early 90's.
Tim, your singing brings back many happy memories of my childhood in the mountains of East Tennessee. Thanks so much for keeping this traditional art alive. You are amazing.

*Finally* today I was able to order both CDs! Can't wait to get them. I was checking out the samples you can listen to, and in addition to all the beautiful ones Tim and Cordelia's Dad sing, it seems that there are tons of other good ones. They'll be fun to learn to sing!

Tim you deserve serious serious recognition for your efforts of keeping tradition alive.. I take my hat off to you. This is fitting of a soldiers burial. When I met my maker I would be proud to have this sung when they lay me to rest. Stunning voice.

The juxtaposition of this old song with the modern, bustling big city is really interesting, and one I wouldn't have thought of.

The Warner collection is really fantastic - check it out, it's a treasury and wonderful songs which need singing!

That Warner collection looks fantastic; looks like it has other songs you sing as well. The Appleseed website says the song is a version of an English ballad "The (Cruel) War is Raging" (also "The Girl Volunteer"), but doesn't say how old the ballad is; maybe the liner notes will say.
