Annette Hanshaw - I Hate Myself For Falling (1931)

Annette Hanshaw (Oct.18,1901 - Mar. 13,1985)

She was one of the first great female jazz singers. In the late 1920s she ranked alongside Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith and the Boswell Sisters.

Her singing style was relaxed and suited the new jazz-influenced pop music of the late 1920s. Although she had a low opinion of her own singing, she continues to have fans because of how she combined the voice of an ingenue with the spirit of a flapper.

Annette Hanshaw did have a great voice. But she came and went 1926-33 when the jazz 'sound' was at its best. It changed from 1934 when it became a major, rather than a minor sound. You can hear yet another change from 1942 onward, then the 'tinny' 60s sound.
