I was thinking of a similar version. Instead of tick marks, you could designate 10 encounters needed to level, and then your level would be represented as tenths of a level. For example, at level three, you have four encounters during the session. At the end of the session, the characters are level 3.4. This is easier to track than a post-it, and makes it very easy to see how many encounters are needed to level.
Yeah, we were really talking about xp a few weeks back. I think I put all my stuff in the maybe 3 vids I did on this topic. But I'm not a big fan of using combat as the major award for xp. I'm glad to see you use rp portions as well.
I've done XP by session, but I've never done it for the number of encounters. It is interesting that you thought of this after reading those sections of the 3.5, Pathfinder, and 4th edition. This is a very interesting way of doing it.
I find this interesting too, honestly never read the text you quoted in the 3.5 DMG. I'll have to think on this, since I hate tracking the math too.

Thanks I have always had issues with the whole ECL thing, I am going to use this method in my campaigns.
