Dona Rosa was an artisan from San Bartolo Coyotepec, located in Oaxaca, Mexico, a region that is widely known and admired for the art of black pottery. Pottery artifacts unearthed in many of Oaxacas archaeological sites have been traced to the clay found only in this area. In the 1950s, the advent of plastic took the place of pottery, which has been used to transport mescal from hillside farms to communities, where it was then sold. The potters of Coyotepec searched for new applications of their pottery skills, and one resident Dona Rosa invented a new method for making decorative black pottery from local clay, which involved a shorter firing time and a polishing treatment to the surfaces. While Dona Rosa has since passed away, her workshop in San Bartolo Coyotepec continues to thrive under the guidance of her son, Don Valente, who often conducts pottery-making demonstrations and where visitors can purchase pieces of regions famous black pottery.
