art is created with the intention of stimulating thoughts and emotions

Sometimes art is cheapened by analysis.

People like Doug Stanhope are the true artists here. Those beret and goatee wearers he mentions are merely disguising the fact that they have no real ideas to speak of which is probably the reason they constantly seek to conceptualise their "work". Doug Stanhope's material actually means something. It's honest and passionate and that's what makes it superior to anything those pretentious hip cats artists could ever dream of producing.

@ESPxTele I think that's a rather sad opinion.
What's wrong with analysing the stories which definitely influence the way we all see the world? Certain stories resonate with a huge amount of people; why?
Sure, enjoy the art for what it is, but don't be afraid to look deeper into it and reflect on what the story conveys to you. Share what you think with other people you respect, and you might learn new and interesting things.
When people don't bother to look into art, I think we get lazy art.

I don't see his problem here really. Kafka wrote a story about a guy turning into a bug. As he said much of the story is self-explanatory and makes sense on its own. The explanatory notes aren't the basic information needed to understand the story, but an additional interpretation meant to build on the story and use it to gain insight into other areas.
It matters very little to me whether Kafka or Doug intend to convey these intellectual messages, but if the messages work with the story: great!

i believe that he IS an artist. Art is the process of manifesting and expressing your thoughts or intuition into reality so that the viewer or listener can resonate with the you. Art and the process of creating is what makes life worthwhile because you contribute to the lives of others. I think that doug knows this, although he gets caught up in the analysis of art.
The problem is people so often confuse artists and intellectuals. An artist can also be an intellectual and vice versa, but they're two seperate concepts. Bukowski fans know what I mean.
There really isn't anything to "get" about art, it simply exists. The intellectuals are the ones who disect it to the point of ruining the real value of the art. Honestly, nobody cares what you think Kafka was saying. He didn't want you to read his books anyway, if he'd had his way they'd have been burned.
