The economic stimulus package includes a "Buy American" clause many U.S. industries lobbied for. Lesley Stahl reports that businesses that export overseas fear foreign governments will retaliate and keep U.S. products out of their market.
Protectionism built american industry, free trade took it and moved it to China. 80% of the US population used to be middle class, now 50% lives on $26k or less.
@TheCashistrash My thoughts exactly. I'm assuming that the guy in the video (Jeremy) making $87k a year has some form of post-secondary with a technical/trade degree/license. Regardless, $87k a year working as a Coal Saw Operator is ridiculous. His salary got cut in half to $43k, and he's talking about "cutting down." For fuck sake, half if his normal salary is still above the average income of a U.S. citizen. I hope Jeremy realizes how fortunate he really is. He's in a great position.
87k a year wages for the average worker who does not have any higher education than high school. even with wages getting cut in half and they can't live on 42k a year? you got to be kidding me. Dumb people living way above your means.
@BYPH I do understand the ramificatiions- you can't have everything- if a manufacturing economy is important If you want a minium wage and a whole list of regulatory protections and social programs then you need to have tarrifs in order to prevent companies from going to countries with a "more compeditive busniess enviroments" that lack these things.
@upyr1 Ok, I don't know if you have studied economics, and I am not an expert. But I don't believe you understand the negative cascade of events if your suggestions were put into effect.
AMERICAN companies have no loyalty to their country, that's why they folded up and move to wherever labor is cheapest. Yet, they have the balls to tell Americans to buy their products simply because it's supposedly "US MADE" where we know not the actual origins of many of the parts as well as labor conditions practiced on US soil. Their workers are mostly illegal immigrants and those willing to work for the lowest pay with least compensation.
2. We should be concerned about the state of industry in the US and should either raise tarrifs or change our regulations. If you don't want tarrifs then
3. If the problem is with wages cut welfare and the minium wage- elimante both.
4. if the problem is with other regulations eleminate them
