The coastal area of Busselton, south of Perth, owns a natural underground reservoir which contains a huge amount of water featuring a very high level of purity. The main danger for this precious resource is for it to be contaminated by the reverse flow of water coming into the mains supply, which could endanger years of water reserves. In addition, Busselton is one of the fastest growing towns in Australia resulting in many new water connections everyday, thus making the risk of contamination even higher.
Itron's mobile radio solution allows for a regular and on demand data collection. The Cyble modules not only register consumption data, but also provide multiple alarms such as tampering attempts, leakages and backflows. In conjunction with our accurate low flow water meters, the Cyble modules watch over every drop of water that passes through the meter. This AMR mobile solution also has the advantage of being flexible enough to grow as fast as the new water connections.
Following a successful pilot phase, Busselton decided to retrofit all of their 11,000 meters with Itron's RF solution. Immediate benefits included easier and faster meter readings, leakage and backflow detection resulting in a better management of the water network and a high level of protection of the natural resource. This project was recognized in 2009 as a finalist in the Keep Australia Beautiful Sustainable Cities Awards as making a significant contribution to the community and environmental sustainability.
