  • gary, why clamp bar with vice grips ? does it really do anything?

  • The clamp prevents the bar from spinning around since the clamp will bump up against the wall.

  • It's a spring-loaded pliers (you mis-spelled it, BTW:).

  • Love the 2x4's on the door ! hahahaha

  • I live in S. Florida and the 2x4's are due to hurricane requirements (from about 13 years ago - may be different now). - Gary

  • I almost killed my wife when one of the springs flew off and whent flying trough the air. Companies are not lying about the springs and its dangers.

But great video and now I see what I was doing wrong. Hell you can choke on bubble gum if your not careful. Just get as much trainning as you can a do the damn thing!!!

  • All these "pros" can't blame the average person for doing this themselves, the CHEAPEST quote I got was $350 parts and labor for my 2 springs. Cost me $52 total. Measure your old springs, order the correct replacements, use proper installation procedure, stay out of the line of fire, done. Took me literally 30 minutes. One thing I would recommend is rotating from downward up to 90deg. This way if you do lose a handle on it it goes firing downward instead of through your skull.

  • @KwaiTerk yes

  • so dangerous. could of put the first 6 to 8 1/4 on by hand. fucking noob

  • Get a socket wrench and an impact drill; it will save you so much time. No wonder you guys charge for labor. You're there for an hour and a half.

  • Thanks for the tutorial. Give a man a fish, feed him once. Teach a man to fish, feed him forever. Anyway, in Northern Virginia, people pay a lot for this type of thing, so companies charge a lot. This saved me about $300 for two hours of work. Thanks for posting this!!!

  • Both of my cable came off the drum when I tried to put one in placed. Will I need to unwind the torsion first to hook the cable back on the door itself?

  • As a handyman this video helped refresh my memory. You Tube sure helps. While enjoying a beverage after a quick spring replacement, thank you Gary for the useful tips, I started reading the discussions. There's always negativity, but from experience; I had a friend shred his hand being expected to "work on" a garage door as a framing carpenter. Pros: you could be helpful to us DIY types providing your own insight into the dangers and how to be safe, instead of just trying to scare everyone away.

  • 31 1/4 turns sounds about right. the only way that door wont be balanced is if its the wrong gauge or length of spring

  • Great video! Thanks! I bet all the thumb downs are by installers that rip people off.

  • Garage door torsion spring replacement part 1

  • Great tutorial Gary! The C clamp was the best advise of all, thanks a lot!
