In 2006 Luke Wilson directed and produced a movie called "Hoot", a bizarre journey which was, unfortunately, one of the less rewarding productions ever in Hollywood Land. The soundtrack of this unfortunate experiment, though, was a little precious gift, mainly due to Jimmy Buffet's efforts poured in. But what makes that soundtrack TRULY amazing for us is the beautiful cover the guys did of one of the absolute 70's classics, the all sweet and charming Bill Withers's masterpiece "Lovely Day".
The original song, penned in 77, was a huge hit and offered one of the longest note ever delivered purely in any pop contemporary music effort: at the end, Withers holds the note firmly for 18 seconds.
But what makes this song amazing is its honesty and clear simplicity in declaring the most heartfelt love.
Its structure is completely simple, its words absolutely crystal clear, instantly understandeable, instantly reliable and shareable. What it takes to pour into this song is the understanding under such a simplicity lays the greatest of depth, the greatest of need, the only aim of us all. LOVE.
As usual, I am amazed when Adam picks up a song to sing that is not his own creation, cos those choices show his personality often better than many other chronicles about him. To make living as he does this song in his own personal way takes to have understood from him that eternal need of mutual and undefeated sharing. It seems like in the end the bad boy isn't bad at all in his core. I believe this completely, in fact, it just takes enough to listen this record, for me.
Beside that, Adam certainly adores Withers, one of the clearest evidence being the constant homage he has always tributed to him during live gigs (Ain't No Sunshine, that should ring a bell), so to make this cover even more mattering, in this recording Bill himself and his daughter Kori sing backing vocals, makin it all even more sparkling. But it's all about the greatest thing, which is also the simplest of them all, here. Love, baby.
I chose this song to wish everybody a wonderful and hopefully peaceful 2009 (although it hasn't started well, sadly, on the peaceful side).
Images are from Bill Withers' 72 video for Lean On Me, from "Page Turner" episode of CSY- NY 5th Season and from SNL Digital short Adam did with Andy Samberg last year (the hilarious Iran So Far, that I finally bought while in USA, cos it seems it may be not included in "Incredibad" this February, God knows why...).
As a little piece of advice, I would warmly recommend you all to dig into Withers's musical experience. It would enrich you all.
About my adored Maroon 5, take all of your time for the 3d album, sweet angels of music. Perfectionism fits your lovely art so well.
Happy 2009 everybody.
With lyrics, as usual.

  • Love Maroon 5, but they just murded the original Bill Wither's version.

  • I am totally disagreeing. And being the great Bill Withers IN this song, singing back vocals along his daughter, I easily think he's of my own opinion, and wouldn't agree with yours. And you know... he must know better than you.

    He most definitely does.
