  • @AVGNRulez this is not a ripoff of AVGN, Review shows were around a long time before AVGN. He's not even doing video games, these are board games. try again.

  • I've played Dominion and Thunderstone. I bought this game and I LOVE it.

I enjoy the simplicity and the speed of the game. I also really enjoy the artwork!

  • I don't see anything wrong with the artwork... he does correct himself by saying some people might enjoy this style but... I really wouldn't call it "the worst artwork I've ever seen in a game".

Other than that, good informative review as always ;)

  • I want to purchase Thunderstone and Ascension. But which one????? I like the dungeon theme in Thunderstone. But I like the the way Ascenion plays too. I can always get both! LOL Any help will be great! Thanks!!!! Again :)

  • Cool game, gonna get it! Im gonna wait to buy the other add-ons. I agree, the art work looks poor. Oh well. Thanks!

  • @edward4basket your never too old to think

  • really dig this steampunkish flavour

  • You have good taste in games, but terrible taste in artwork Mr. Vasel. :)

  • lol i thought this was gonna be a review for nazi zombies

  • @Whyldcarrd This sounds identical to the argument against Race which is even more random. The point in Race at least is to build a tableau or deck that can take advantage of a number of opportunities at any moment in the game. You can't force anything in Race, you simply need to be in the position to take advantage.

I imagine Ascension is built along the same principal. You can't force any tactic but you can end up with a certain overall tactic or theme due to clever playing.

  • lol he bought the monster card, rules mistake.

  • @jacknmellor werd

  • thumbs up if you were looking for the zombie map review probs a cool game though

  • thumbs up if you were looking for the zombie map review

  • the problem with this game is that it feels so luck-based. if you buy a decent card, it might just open a spot for a great card to come out for your opponent. You have no idea what kind of long-term strategy to buy other than 'buy hard', 'draw hard' or 'beat down'

that said, i'd like to play it a few more times just so to get a better feeling of the game. i think it has nice game feel, just the luck-trumping-strategy factor feels bad for a game.

  • Tanto Cuore! Nice! "or are they?" yes I think tanto cuore is also a "fantasy theme" at least for me :) I'd like to try that game however it is very costly and Im not sure it will be worth the 80$ or so. My friend why not review tanto Cuore!

  • I tested both this and thunderstone at Spiel 2010. IMHO Ascension is the way better game. Thunderstone is just trying to do way to much with little player interaction. Ascension is fast paced and there are still enough ways to interact/disturb your opponents and different angles to build a deck.

I'm also a fan of Dominion, but Dominion almost always has 1-3 obviously strategies for the whole match, viewable right from the beginning.

I wouldn't agree, that this game is way behind Dominion.

  • @ZeroTakenaka

Probably because Justin Gary designed it with the goal of improving the parts of Dominion that annoyed him ^^ IMHO he did a really good job.

  • We tried it at essen this year and instantly bought it. The group thinks this and thunderstone are far superior to dominion and we all like the art. Meh, a matter of tastes i suppose

  • Interesting. In trying to decide between Ascension and Dominion, one of the main draws of this game is that I like the art. I find the art in Dominion to be bland and boring. However, I am not sure I could get my girlfriend to play Ascension because of the dark content of the art.

For me Thunderstone and Graxia comparisons are irrelevant. Those games are way too fiddly and complicated for me casual gaming friends to play. Only Dominion and Ascension seem easy enough to teach to them.

  • Tom, have you heard of Puzzle Strike? It's the Dominion "clone" that best caught my attention so far, but I'm waiting to see more reviews on it before buying. Just a suggestion :P

And a review of Tanto Cuore would really be interesting to see! Maybe a "weird adult content" disclaimer in the beginning of the review would be enough? I'm curious to see how that game works.

    Great review as always!

  • You forget to mention that you can play it out of the box. Dominion is a pain to set up and store, esp with all the expansions.
