  • I have a sand rail i purchase with a trany that has 3 ribs on top, a Gear reduction box on the axle's. The guy that i bout it from said it's a 1600cc Engine. But how can i determine that? I've try to look for the code on the engine block besides or under neath the Resperator... and it appears to be scracth off :-( Any help?

    Thanks,

    Sincerly, a VW Enthusias :-)

  • @DirtyRailers

the type 4 is very different that the type 1....the quickest way to tell the difference is by looking at the exhaust ports on the heads. The type 1 always directs the exhaust horizontally and the type 4 vertically. The cooling system is another give away but aftermarket systems for the type 4 are now available that are similar to the type 1 style.

    thx for watchin'!

  • Thanx for the videos. I got a 78 2.0 in my 72 westy. Switched to a single Weber progressive from stock 72 dual solex. Big mistake...I assume the dual Weber IDF is a good set up....?

  • @lisadaveg

the set i ran on my Type 4 ran flawlessly.....but for the money in would recommend a set of ICT's. A set of dual 40's runs about 700 bucks, a dual set of ICT's will cost you around 400....for the money i would definitely recommend them.

    thx for watchin'

  • Hambone! It's me, Max! Formerly Starbucksmunky, I got a new Youtube account. I'm happy you got your Type 4 started up :) and installed. Unfortunately, I had to sell my '78 bus, but hopefully I'll be buying a blue and white '71 soon (going to college, free money for low income students :D, I can spend it on anything. I'll keep you updated!

  • Thanks.

  • They say there's no stupid questions if there not ask. I'm sort of new to the vw world, and i'm getting fun of it :-D

What is a Type 4 Engine? I heard you say it came out of your van, what year and model and what type of transmission does it have?

  • You could put a "kill switch" to the Coil and crank the engine first, then hit the switch powering the coil. I have done this for years with high compresion motors of all types. It works real good. V.
