As this child is sleeping his body is experiencing what is known as an apneic episode. As his airway collapses, oxygen is not able to enter his lungs, causing an increase in carbon dioxide, resulting in a poor sleep pattern. Pediatric apnea is often associated with decreased growth, ADD, ADHD and nocturnal neurosis. Children with this health problem should have a specific pediatric sleep study and be evaluated by an ENT physician and dentist.
