This instructional video by Scuba.com differentiates the two types of spearguns. The first type is the pneumatic speargun which has no bands. It is powered by air and when you push the spear in it will give it pressure to shoot back out. A banded spear gun will have usually one to three bands you pull back and put into notches on the spear. Both are great spearguns it just depends on what you are looking for.

  • I found a great gun with two bands, but will it work from a boat, shooting gar and buffalo fish. Because I'm not much good for bowfishing.

  • @Arainiad08 It is never advisable to cock a speargun OUT of the water. It can be very dangerous to the user and those around them.

  • Sure it can! That would be a very big issue for scuba divers if it could not.

  • What you are asking is akin to asking which pickup truck is more powerful. Comparing guns in a similar class you'll find them about the same. Comparing a Mares Mini to a 3-band Openwater Hunting gun, of course the band gun is FAR more powerful. Compare a JBL travel combo to a long Mares Cyrano gun and again it'll be no contest as the Cyrano is a larger more powerful gun.

  • hey im buying a pneumatic speargun atm i use a band one but i dont like it so i was just wondering i need info bout all the stuff to do with the pressure system and all that coz im new to pnuematice and i dont want to damage my gun when i get it

  • the pneumatic one cant be reloaded under water can it

  • SO WHICH ONE'S MORE POWERFULL???

  • the pneumatic works like a nerf gun... a much deadlier and more powerful nerf gun..

  • @Brokenwindoww That is one theory, but most of your open water hunters tend to lean toward the band style guns.
