Comparision bethween DI box and mic recording with a Bogner Alchemist

I did this video comparision first of all for myself, i'm trying to find better tone for record my songs. I work a lot with pod for recording, but i'm trying different approach to improve tone as i'm not satisfied of all my tones. I used quite cheap (but effective) stuff for this test. The amp is a great Bogner Alchemist, effects like reverb and dilay is all stuff of the amp. The DI box is a cheap but rather decent Behringer Ultra-G connected bethween speakers and amp with the 412 switch on (it is the only tone setting of this amp, with speaker simulation or not). The mic is Shure PG57, a cheaper version of the SM57 with a similiar tone and quality. Both are cheap solution for home recording. Volume of the amp is low (as loud volume is one of bigger problem in home recording) so amp wont be cranked and neither speaker. Mic is put in front of one speaker, the Celestion G12H to be more precise, at center 15 cm far for the amp. Thinking about dummy load, isocab and other future buy is on my mind but i really need to understand difference and behavior of various way to record electric guitar at home.

I recorded all this with a little usb mixer (yamaha audiogram6) without any post work on it, just a bit of compression in the mixer for reduce peaks of dynamics especially on clean tones. I mixed mono DI, mono mic and stereo (DI on left mic on right) so it is possible switch exactly same note in real time to both tones.

Behringer DI box did a rather good work, especially for the price, better in cleans than overdriven ones in my opinion. Mic is more mid oriented (other speaker is a Greenback so is more mid boosted than the G12H) but realistic one. Sure is needed some post work, as any record, but my goal is to evalutate the tone, you can equalize easily the tone as you want but you cant add richness you loose before. Mix of both tones give some pretty interesting results, as they play (especially on leads) totally differents.

Mic well an amp is an art, and require lot of experience (i need to train with that), stuff and the right acoustic too and give better performance for professionist but to do a good home recording with a mic is a different stuff, with plenty of alternatives hardware and software for amp and for speakers, and problems with volume, acoustic and price. So i would spend time (and maybe money) on it, maybe i'll post other video with my search.

Guitar is my modded SX strat with ash body, single coil tone is a texas special tele on the neck (on cleans and crunch) and humbucking is a dimarzio tonezone (bridge).

@Poldo77miticu ahia, si gli hard disk partono in posti dove ci sono vibrazioni... la di-box è comodissima, perché esclude tutto il discorso acustico e ti da già un suono di valore e impedenza adatto al mixer. d'altro canto rispetto alla simulazione software avanzata, un emulatore di cassa a circuito non ha certo lo stesso livello di articolazione (anche se alla fine ti basta che si senta decentemente, cosa che spesso non è!) e non hai tutte le rogne tipiche del microfonaggio.

@rafport quindi presumo che la userò solo per casa...poi ho avuto il bruto o come lo chiamavo affettuosamente il "Rutus" che ho venduto per il nuovo laney che mi piaghe assaje....e quindi o mic o DI per piazze ma preferisco DI credo siano più comode...e nella tua prova suona molto bene...

@rafport @rafport io non ho mai avuto DI, per anni ho avuto la GT8 ma attaccata al mixer non era molto convincente, l'ho venduta e ho preso il GR con la pedaliera /scheda audio dedicata e il suo lavoro lo fa egregiamente, l'unica cosa e che dopo averla usata in alcuni live causa vibrazioni ho perso l'HD del pc:-(

@Poldo77miticu per un esperimento ci stanno, secondo me una DI Box serve, è di quelle cose che magari ne fai a meno ma tendi a sottovalutare. specie con i singoli prima di alcune schede m-audio che ho (ma anche di ampli modeling tipo il cube) fa davvero un suono nettamente migliore. con la focusrite no, ma manco lo peggiora. e poi ci attacco gli ampli a manetta per profilarli sul mixer. se li vale :)

@Poldo77miticu visto il costo davvero abbordabile (specie online, a cagliari l'ho pagato almeno una decina di euro in più) io ti direi di provate questa DI-Box della Behringer. Secondo me vale più di quel che costa, e hai modo di vedere se effettivamente il suono che ne viene fuori ti aggrada (scordati il livello di complessità della risposta dei coni di Guitar Rig, ma pure col Palmer...). Magari te la provi anche su Guitar Rig prima della scheda audio e noti che suoi singoli recuperi armoniche

@rafport Capisco...io la userei olrte che per registrare in saletta anche come alternativa al microfono in modo da andare in diretta sull'impianto... nn ho idea di quale sia la migliore per questi scopi...Poi boh alla fine per regisrtare a casa uso guitar rig che secondo me è un ottimo prodotto

@Poldo77miticu non sto ovviamente dicendo che non vale nulla eh! Dico che è una cosa diversa. E comunque questa DI-Box ha una ottima reputazione, a prescindere dal costo l'ho vista usare spesso nei service di vari concerti. Io credo che le emulazioni di cassa hardware, con circuito, son destinate a sparire visto i livelli stellari che hanno raggiunto altre soluzioni modeling o a impulsi, quindi trovo più utile il ruolo di vera DI-Box piuttosto che della simulazione di cassa.
