@longbottle English is descendant from western germanic languages which are part of germanic branch of indo-european languanges, which in turn is a family compromising languanges distinct as latin, greek and sanskrit.
Latin influenced english vocabulary as the roman empire culture ruled europe for several centuries, but English itself is direct descendant of Frisian dialects spoken on western germany. As any language in the group, english share many similarities with all of them.

I've actually been told that English is the hardest language to learn, because all other languages share at least some similarities.

@TalulahCarmichael English is a partial descendant of Latin and German, and as such shares similarities with Italian, Spanish, and German.
