this trick rules
i like it because you dont want to watch it incase the magicain get hurt but you still do

Ignore the comment below! If this effect were left to chance, there would be a serious injury three out of four times! I've seen Ron perform this effect over and over again. He is never wrong and the effect this routine has on the audience is heart-stopping. Unless you are a skilled professional, such as Mr. Saylor, leave this alone. Do not trust your own safety to mere chance. You will be hurt.

has that ever gone wrong?

The cup is not marked, it could be changed. However, the nail begins in a stand and no volunteer can change this. They dont pick the stand the nail goes in. And when the cups are on top, you can still see the marked edge. :D

Brilliant! I saw this performed this evening by Ron, and although I've seen it done before by other magicians, in never loses it's effectiveness. Ron even puts his own spin on this, and it's even MORE impressive live than it is here. Great job, Ron!

he should put 3 spikes and one empty cup
-
my mates uncle did this at a party and he moved the cups 'to get the cups evenly apart' when actually he knew which on was the heaviest so he didnt suash the sppike
-
a lot of magicians will have the spectator not only slide the cups but also give them the option of picking the cups up and changing the cup that the spike is concealed beneath. For a good example of that youtube "Mondo Magic - Smash Nail" performed by Chris Korn. It will dispel such a simple notion. I will personally not perform this trick. As a magician your hands are kind of important to your profession =P

that would be easier to do the trick; but there is no mark on the cup
-
I had an illusionist do this to a friend on stage at my school and I was shaking.
-
THAT is the insane part.. Would you stop if you knew the volunteer picked the wrong cup?
Or is that not possible? :P
Yes. As a magician, it is expected that I have mastered each effect prior to performing it for an audience. Unfortunetely, not every performer follows these guidelines. If you want to see for yourself, In the YouTube search bar, enter "Magic Gone Wrong".

all they have to do is have a marking on the cup with the spike

Good attempt at a guess. But, the random volunteer picked the cup every time. Not the magician.

probably some marker of some sort on the cup with the thing in it.

Sometimes the volunteers switch the cups while I am not looking, so that would not be reliable, but good guess.
