Roopkotha: A child genius living up to his name
Dhaka, Feb. 18 -- At the tender age of four, when most kids can at best hack away at some games on a computer, Wasik Farhan Roopkotha is skilled enough to operate Windows XP, including the whole Microsoft Office suite Access, and Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and surf the internet like a veteran. The born genius, a resident of Gulshan in capital Dhaka, unbelievably started toying around with the mouse and keyboard attached to his parents' computer with panache, when he was barely seven months old.

Roopkotha, born 27 January 2006, is now capable of operating the computer all by himself.

The IT professionals at Cosmos Centre expressed their wonder witnessing the computer skills of the little devil when he visited the UNB office recently.

During his two-hour visit to the UNB office, Roopkotha, whose name translates to'fairytale' in English, demonstrated his extraordinary proficiency at the computer using all kinds of software.

He made folders and saved those at directed drives, installed software and games CDs, made graphs and tables, aced various tough games, and browsed the internet and edited images in Photoshop as if he was playing with a 4-year old's toys!

It was enthralling to see the boy type words with his tiny fingers on the keyboard. He can type as swift as any highly efficient typist, almost never having to even look at the keyboard!

"Roopkotha is a special gift of the Almighty Allah. In fact, what he showed within a short time is really incredible. I think the competence he has attained on the computer in this early age, many of my colleagues have not attained that level even till now," remarked Abdullah Mukhaffar, a very senior computer engineer at Cosmos Telecom, setting the cat amongst the pigeons on his floor.

According to Roopkotha's proud mother Cynthia Farheen Risha, her boy spends more than 12 hours everyday on her computer. He has already played more than 200 games, and done away with some extremely complicated ones like Hercules, Air Rival, Age of Mythology, Metal Gear Solid, Mig-29, Dog Fight 2, the Need for Speed series, Sonic 3D, and Resident Evil 3, some of which incidentally, many Cosmos Centre employees are also struggling with.

Risha claimed that her amazing kid is familiar with all computer programs, and apprised us of his high level of knowledge of both software and hardware.

She said Roopkotha can install any software and games as they should be, browse the internet easily, and upload, download, and edit pictures using Photoshop, or even Adobe Illustrator, which is a more difficult program to master.

Besides all this, he has enriched his knowledge of the computer by familiarising himself with some other operational programs on different systems like XP, Vista, Oracle, etc.

Roopkotha is also curious about space and has some knowledge on the solar system, while continuing to learn more.

Risha dreams that the boy will set a world record of some sort in the cyber, and earn fame for his motherland. Bless her. But bless her child more!
