Writing the Ending Scene for "To Try The Man"

In this scene, the crew of the Yorktown are reassembled and are given a new lease on life. They are getting ready to embark on new adventures in "Star Trek: The Romulan Wars." This scene has Lt. Elizabeth Cutler (played by Melissa Jecker - another one of our esteemed Professional actors) assuming her new role as the XO. Her character actually was featured in Season 1 of "Star Trek: Enterprise" and was played by the late Kellie Waymire. The character in that series was to be more of a regular, but with the passing of Kellie, the character never continued. In honor of Kellie, and as a way to tie in "Enterprise" to this independent film effort, I thought that it would be nice to explore this character more, so she was added to the storyline. Because the original character had more of an interest in alien relationships, I thought that she wouldn't interact with humans very well but felt more at home with those that most humans would consider unusual. I based some of Cutler's behaviors and responses on a friend of mine who has Autism. Cutler possesses the ability to be a great officer, but she has to learn how to cope with dealing with social interaction. So, in this scene, she has just been made XO of the Yorktown, and the Captain has given her the responsibility (her first as XO, by the way) of taking the Yorktown out of dry dock. While you really never saw this type of formality in taking a ship out of dry dock, I wanted the scene to incorporate Cutler showing off her abilities as XO so I patterned this dialogue on the NASA mission control procedures and dialogue during a countdown to lift off. Melissa is also a dream to write for because she has so much confidence and personality. I only wish there were more scenes of her that I could share.
