Shoshana Bean performs "Home" at Scott Alan's CD Release event for 'Dreaming Wide Awake' on January 7, 2008. CD available on CDbaby.com/scottalan and iTunes.

BACKSTORY: Well, Shoshana gives the backstory on how we met, and how this song came to be, so I am going to take another direction with this one.

The first time Shoshana and I ever performed this song together was at a Benefit Event called 'The Kitchen Sink.' Shoshana's last day at Hairspray was that day. It was on a Sunday. She was already very emotional. I was very emotional, too. I didn't know ANYONE. To my left was Stephanie J. Block and Julia Murney (neither one I had worked with yet) and to my right was the adorable David Burtka and Anythony Rapp. Shoshana was running late, so I was waiting downstairs in the greenroom, by myself, twiddling my thumbs. Finally Shoshana showed up, but we were told to go upstairs and wait on the side for our performance.

Everyone sang two songs. Shoshana sang The Cornet Man from Funny Girl, first. Then she called me up on stage to perform 'Home.' I was SHAKING so badly. The song went beautifully and when we were done, we went to sit back down with everyone. David Burtka was crying and touched my leg when he told me he loved the song and I thought, 'wow, this is a nice moment.' (not the touching of the leg, though, that was nice, too. Just the feeling of being 'special' and a part of something in the theatre community).

Ok, so, that's still not the story. I am on a high. I think I am something really special. I walk to the subway thinking in my head 'yup, I am a star. Better believe it. Don't mess with me' when I hear these girls in front of me talking about the concert. I start walking faster to hear what they had to say, when one of them goes 'I know, right ? Shoshana Bean is so amazing, but what was that horrible song she sang at the end ? 'Home' ? Just really really bad, the worst song of the night' and her two other friends agree'd .... I felt like I was back in highschool. My ego balloon, popped by a thirteen year olds opinion.

Ya, I realized at THAT moment, you either can handle the criticism and keep on going, or you can let it hold you down. I took a few seconds, thought about it and it was at that moment I decided ...

Lets keep on going.

  • @bnorem09 Why compare? 2 totally different types of performers with talent that blows a lot of people away.

  • better than the recording

great quality sound to her voice, amazing

  • @wickedphant0m Really? I didn't know she was making a new album! I'll definetly check it out. And I don't doubt it can get huge, this woman's got a voice.. :] Thanks for the heads up!

  • @GiovannaClapis Shoshana's second album is going to be LEGIT. She's written over a dozen new songs since her first album came out, and there are some real winners in the mix. I think it may really take her places.

  • dear scott, you simply are amazing. this song changed me and has helped me so much through hard times in my life. not just this song though, your entire album still dreaming wide awake has completely wharped my view of good music. thank you for sharing your wonderful gift with the world. i love sho singing this song and couldn't think if anyone else singing it, and anyone else just does not give it the justice it deserves.

  • 3.5 yrs later...This performance still gets me everytime.

  • she is so funny!! and talented!!

  • @DirtyRottenScoundrel That's really nice! :] I'm not pro about MT, bt I agree that some songs MT performers write suck, though the 1% left is great!

LOL, neither do I want to listen to "power ballads 24/7", and I'm a theater freak. ^^

I dn't think they'd make it to the mainstream culture, bt I don't think they want it either. As I said below, they have a community that loves them for everything they do. I just think that they deserve that kind of recognition, even though they don't rly need it.

  • @DirtyRottenScoundrel I agree with you here, Lady Gaga is creative. I have to admit that her songs are very original. The thing I like about Lady Gaga is that she is, IMO, a personification of a lot of things, and that's what makes her original as you said yourself (that's also what the mainstream culture wants, though it doesn't mean I'm underestimating her talent). ^^
