Sorry, but this is all just excuses and prevarication. The simple fact is, Sura 4:34 say it IS permissable to commit violence in order to discipline a rebellious wife. This IS NOT accepatble in western society, even if it is just "lifting a toothpick", in the west men neither "own" nor "govern" women, even their wives. Women are full persons, entitled to make thier own decisions and entitled to the full protetcion of the law, that includes protetcion from violence, even from their husbands.

@thanksgodforall if it still doesnt work then he is allowed to lightly hit not on the face but to just tell her to stop, the hit cant bruse or make bleed so with a tooth pick its vertually like nothing... if the man does something wrong then the can go to the higher authority which is the imam of the mosque for example or the husbands mum, as she has a right over him... u may say that why cant she beat him??? God almighty gave the authority to the man to keep the houshold obeyin GOD.

@thanksgodforall the point here that GOD Says in the quran that he had created the men to b the protectors of the wife and the house etc u get the point... So having said that GOD also says that he has given the responsibility to the man in this case [nothing to do with equality by the way which many peolple missunderstand] So when the wife does something wrong, the husband tells her shes doin wrong, then stops being affectionate if it doesnt work, then to be continued
