For my creative assignment I decided to use a photography/ integrated media approach combined with poetry.
The poetic part of the assignment is a collection of six haikus that deal with Ma. Ma is the interval that links space and time. It is a Japanese term that has no direct translation in the English language. It can be related to empty, gap or space or as the space between two structural parts.
Some of the inspiration that I got to make the haikus came from the poem "The Uses of Not" by Laozi, the Taoist philosopher. I wanted to have an aspect of philosophy in the poems.
As for the photographic/ integrated media aspect of the project I show ink in a sink with the symbol for Ma. It slowly gets washed away till it is a clean sink. This is an obvious relation to Jun' taro's interest in the washroom and a contrast of the western obsession with cleaning.
I have compiled the haikus here:
Ma
Space of time between
The flow of time linking space
Emptiness is ma
In the washrooms
Space is the essence of all
Each holds space and time
The sinks emptiness
That's the essence of a sink
The place hands can wash
The toilet, a bowl
A bowl to hold wastes inside
Space's essence is held
The space of the bath
Water held in its essence
We bathe in the space
The Space linking time
Ma has no word in the west
Empty, space, clear...none
what pretentious cak - nothing you say actually holds any meaning, resonance or metaphor. The ink is interesting, but the words kill it.
