A 10-FOOT concrete statue of what looks like St. Joseph was found buried behind the St. Michael the Archangel Church in Samboan town, southern Cebu.

The discovery has puzzled residents and officials who wonder about the statues origins.

I am not sure if it is St. Joseph but it is a statue of a man with a beard, unpainted and with missing fingers, said Baby Manuel of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office.

Nobody knows how it got buried there and who made it, she said.

Manuel was part of the advance party of the Cebu provincial government's Suroy-Suroy sa Sugbo Southern trail project that passed through several towns south of the province.

The statue is about 10 feet in height and three to four feet in diameter. It was unearthed at the playground fronting the school (St. Pius High School) and just behind the St. Michael the Archangel church, she said.

She also said the spot where the statue was buried was about four feet to five feet deep.
Samboan Mayor Raymond Calderon said the statue was found early this month.

There were unverified reports that a female resident of Badian town, about 42 kilometers away had dreamt of the buried statue.

Calderon said church nuns told him that there were reports that the woman visited Fr. Pedrosa and told him of her dream.

The nuns said that the statue used to stand within the St. Pius school grounds until it fell about 20 years ago.

Because it was heavy, they could not make it stand again and so they buried it, Calderon said in Cebuano.

But Calderon said he had yet to verify the reports with Fr. Pedrosa. Bernadette A. Parco and Reporter Doris C. Bongcac
