  • There are many sources out there to help people to learn how to scream.

I have been teaching "screaming techniques" for over 30 years. Many of my students realize that the screams in their low voices, middle voices and high voices are made in the same place and can now scream without any discomfort. Taking voice lessons, watching other sources and reading are the best steps to finding your own scream voice.

  • Hey,

I've got both Melissa Cross ZOS 1 & 2, and also the Art of Screaming on DVD- I'm also a trained singer, had vocal lessons for several years (I know all the basic exercises). However, I still can't scream! It's either just the quiet, false chord "fry"...but that doesn't sound like screaming to me...when I try and put that into yelling, it still catches in the throat. I want to learn to scream like Marilyn Manson (but I'm a female vocalist) Anyone got any advice?

  • @blacksummerland

If you want to learn to scream and since you are a trained singer the best advice is get a teacher to guide you. Sometimes when you are a trained singer you might worry about hurting your voice. But I can guide you if you really want to learn. Many of my students come to me with the same problem. Susan Carr

  • Let it be known that there are many resources, many teachers before Ms. Cross who have been teaching techniques of screaming. Look at their background, their education, their students. Then you make a decision. The Art of Screaming is no clone. Susan Carr has her own techniques.

  • when you scream, you should b able to relax your throat, then u will be able to scream however you like, for a longer period, but if you're new, drink alot of water between the songs. it's like a muscle, u just need to learn how to control it. but don't tighten the throat all the time or u'll just end up fucking your voice over...=)

  • When you watch the DVD you will see that the most important lesson to be learn is to use the muscles of the abdominals as well as the thighs as well as the muscles around the knee caps for the highest notes in your register, then you will never engage the muscles of your throat.

  • putting that douchebag from alien ant farm in with other ACTUAL metal band singers is a travesty. you people should be ashamed of yourselves. dryden mitchell's throat would burst into flames half-way through one mastodon song.

  • @SuperToother Because he didn't want to be in it?

  • where the FUCK is phil anselmo?!?! i love troy sanders and mastodon, but seriously how could this exist and not have phil in it?!

  • Wheres Trevor Strnad?

  • i'm buying this for Chino Moreno

  • @Samplelord

But they are a different technique tho. They did a more natural kind of scream. It was there own voice. Most commonly used scream nowadays is a forced change of voice. I prefer the more old way of screaming.

  • @Clike666ness

Your right, they both did scream in the early day's ( cant believe I forgot those long screams).....although not through the whole song.

But they are examples of screaming without "tricks" and were the first to do that high pitched scream in metal....

  • @Samplelord

Ah that kind of scream. I see Araya and Hetfield(young) as screaming as well. Because screaming a high pitch tone IMO.

  • @Clike666ness

Old school Hetfield like Tom Araya are more shouters, has a more hardcore vibe to it and you can still hear some kind of pitch.

Screaming, to me, is singin in a toneless voice that is your own...with that I mean no mic cupping, inhale screaming, distortion effect, etc.....simply put, the volume of your scream should be as loud/little louder than your clean singing voice.

  • @Samplelord

What would be your example of screaming? Just curious. Because screaming comes in multiple styles. I mean, old school James Hetfield is a screamer too.
