PRINCE PHILIP PUTS HIS FOOT IN IT

PRINCE PHILIP put his foot in it with a vintage gaffe when he and the Queen met Barack Obama and his wife Michelle for the first time yesterday.

There was a certain inevitability about it. Faced with an historic meeting with the worlds most powerful man and the first black President of the United States, the 87-year-old Duke of Edinburgh was bound to put his stamp on the conversation with one of his celebrated remarks.

As Mr Obama, 47, described how he had spent the day meeting British politicians, Chinese leaders and the Russians, a guffawing Philip blurted out: Can you tell the difference between them?

It was, given his record for talking about Chinese slitty eyes, dud Indian factory products, Scottish alcoholics and Hungarian pot-bellies, not the wisest thing to say.

The controversial exchange came in the small talk as the couples met in the Queens private apartments at Buckingham Palace.

The Queen and Philip were sympathising with the Obamas about their gruelling schedule since they arrived on Tuesday evening.

The time lag, the Queen said, understandingly.

Youre just trying to stay awake! Philip interjected.

Picking up on the theme, Mr Obama told the royal couple: I had breakfast with the Prime Minister, I had meetings with the Chinese, the Russians, David Cameron...and Im proud to say I did not nod off in one of the meetings.

It was then that Philip replied: Can you tell the difference between them?

Buckingham Palace officials insisted that he had merely been observing that after such a busy schedule there was a danger that one meeting would merge into another in the Presidents mind.

You can see the point where the joke Pops in 90year old brain.

Its as soon as Obama mentions the "Chinese", his face lights up like 5year old in toy shop.

At the same time the Queens smile disappears when Obama says the "Chinese", (Because she knows what's coming very soon and she cant stop him from saying it)
