It was a gorgeous day yesterday, so I decided to go Roller Skiing. Roller skis are off season devices professional level Cross Country skiers use to train in the summer.

When I was super fit in the past, I was obsessed with X-Country Ski, and hence purchased a pair.

I am a bit rusty, and skied for a total of about 1 mile. This is a new rail trail, but I think they ran out of money: not a bench to be found!

See http://www.jenex.com/ for more info on Roller Skis.

Other YouTube Roller Ski Videos:

  • I found some additional roller ski videos here on YouTube (links in the sidebar):

The first is a clip from amazing race.

These people are complete novices, and totally miss the fact that you ski by alternately kicking off with your left, and right feet.

Its pretty funny to watch them struggle, and repeatedly fall.

They also violated one of the most fundamental safety rules of roller skiing: dont ski in hilly terrain, if you dont know how to effectively stop!

  • The second video demonstrates Classic Roller Ski technique.

Cross Country Skiing is divided into two types: Classic, where the skis remain in a straight line, and Skating, where you ski in a V: this technique closely resembles how you would typically Roller Blade. The equipment is vastly different depending upon which style one chooses.

  • Last is a video better documenting what is known as the Double Pole: skiing in which you propel yourself forward, without moving your feet: This technique is a great workout for your arms, and stomach muscles.

  • That was really cool! I never knew these roller skis existed!

  • I suspect most people wouldn't know such a device existed, unless you live in an area where pro level x-country skiers train.

My first college was also a Olympic Education Center, that housed the Cross Country Ski team. We would regularly see the team out training on Roller Skis.

They of course could go way faster on them, than I do. They also don't fear falling nearly as much. lol.

Falling is part of the course in Roller Skiing. After a few dozen falls, you learn how to fall properly.

  • i have never heard of roller skiiing before! haha this is an awesome video.

  • Thanks!

As I said in the side bar, roller skis are devices used by professional level X-Country Skiers to train in the off season, these are not something the typical American would own.

They are also really expensive, I paid around 500 dollars for these seven years ago. I since upgraded the bindings (the device that holds your boot to the ski), and boots for an additional $200 dollars.

Anyway, Cross Country Skiing is one of the best full body workouts you can achieve.
