Hannibal conquered northern Italy passing through Alps in winter supported by African elephants. He was defeated at Zama in 202 by Roman General named Publius Cornelius Afrcanus. The Romans named the continent Africa from the word Ifer/afer a tribe in Tunisia. Before the Romans the Greeks named the continent Ethiopia.
