On C-SPAN's BookTV, Jonah Goldberg just really jumps the shark on this one. He is desperate to equate any type of populist movement to fascism and seems to forget what the definition of fascism even is. The man just earned an A in the rewriting of history grade. I'm sure Ann Coulter is very proud of him. And those jumbo-trons he's fear mongering about....hate to tell you but we've got them now. They're called Fox News.

For more of a flavor of what was in this entire program and Goldberg's attempt at revisionist history you can read Goldberg's interview at Salon here titled "We're All Fascists Now:

  • He conveniently ignores that FDR, a liberal progressive, led the fight on fascism while conservative Republicans were isolationists. Fascism is always the jack booted thug. There is no namby pamby fascism any more than there is namby pamby Stalinism. "Soft fascism" is an oxymoron and any actual fascist will tell you that (when Carlin invented the term he was referring to capitalist entities forming a consensus based on lies). Goldberg never mentions Duke, Rockwell, the KKK etc.

  • Jonah Goldberg makes a ton of sense.

  • I did read the book. Biggest piece of crap ever. Very easy to debunk if you know the facts. Goldberg is the biggest 5 year old on the planet. Read actual scholars on the subject: Paxton, Griffin, Seldes, Bosworth, Gentile. Goldberg is a lying fraud.

  • @Aegius

Your populist defense of Fascism I have no doubt rests upon a solid foundation of myths engendered by years of listening to right wing talk radio as you yourself have suggested. To the unlikely event that even a shard of history should be permitted to cast its long shadow over your market driven Utopian dream for the individual, remember Hitler's maxim; 'Competition helps to cultivate the individual fighter and mankind often owes its success in part to this very doctrine of competition'

  • @Aegius

Capitalist Utopia is a fading pipe dream & the economic equivalent of Social Darwinism put in force in the form of legislation for the Eugenics laws in the US which provided Hitler's inspiration for the Nazi Racial Hygiene Program. The GOP's free market Utopia must first eliminate democracy to pursue its vision of a perfect society operating as a theater of violent economic conflict between individuals locked in combat to eliminate all but the most ruthless predators. Survive & rule.

  • @Aegius Chicago School economists supported a series of Fascist revolutions, military coups and failed Utopias across Latin America with a shock doctrine that collapsed the economy & Gov of Argentina in 2001. If you turn up the hate radio that informs you loud enough & you may be able to drown out history? Church ministers in Germany adopted a similar practice instructing the choir to raise their voices in an attempt to drown out the screams of the Jews as the trains passed during services

  • @jazzbo66zz Seriously, go read from the horse's mouth rather than what your college professors taught you. Go listen to talk radio(Dennis Prager, Michael Medved, Hugh Hewitt, Mark Levin) or read their books especially Thomas Sowell. Hitler did not like the free market and hated the beourgeoisie as he lumped them in with the Jews, so there is no "market fundamentalism" w/him and he was not a fan of big business & hated Christianity.

  • @jazzbo66zz "the imaginary specter of justice set loose upon his vision of a free market Utopia." Wow. You really did go to college. Which Ivy League school screwed you over this badly? No one anywhere stated that the free market brings a Utopia, but gradual improvement. Seriously, go read Hayek, Ludwig von Mises, Thomas Sowell. They don't talk of Utopia, but of gov making things worse w/ or w/o intention. The implementation of justice is done by government, not by the freemarket.

  • @jazzbo66zz "Democracy evolves because the market economy devolves." You definitely went to college. Market economy devolves via gov take-over. That means more socialism or at least more Fascism via more gov control. Market economy means people operating independent of gov in voluntary transactions. That is called liberty, which is opposite of gov control that mean socialism or Fascism. The Right isn't seeking a Utopia. Never did. The Left has sought Utopia many times & created Hell for it.

  • @jazzbo66zz Do you believe that gov has the right to force us to purchase a product at gun point? Do you believe that gov has the right to force doctors and other professionals to be solely under its control and not allowed to operate independently? Mussolini wanted ALL workers and associations including businesses under gov management and control. So did Hitler.
