Enhanced recovery at Birmingham Women's Hospital is enabling women to go home just a few days after a hysterectomy.

On average women undergoing a hysterectomy at Birmingham Women's Hospital go home three days after their operation.

The increased recovery speed is thanks to better psychological preparation and encouragement of patients throughout every stage of their journey to ensure they are given clear information about the hysterectomy procedure and the steps they can take to improve their recovery.

Professor Janesh Gupta, consultant in obstetrics & gynaecology at Birmingham Women's Hospital, said: "They are able to recover just by the sheer fact that we can get them to mobilise quickly.

"We can get them to eat and drink quickly soon after the operation."

Professor Gupta and his team have also developed improvements to their operating technique helping to reduce the length of the operation and minimise post operative complications.

Zoe Tatt, a pre-op Assessment Sister at Birmingham women's hospital, added: "I think the important thing is to dispel a lot of the myths that people might come in with."

The team are also carrying out research to further enhance recovery by interviewing their patients throughout the procedure and commissioning a DVD explaining their hysterectomy pathway.

"It's all about empowering patients, it's all about giving them the resources that they need to take control of their health and their own recovery and give them the confidence and resources they need to get better quicker." Said Dr Manjeet Shehmar Clinical consultant in obstetrics & gynaecology at Birmingham Women's Hospital.
