At Neofunctional Materials 2008, NEC displayed their highly functional bioplastics which are made from plant extracts thus cutting down on carbon dioxide emissions and conserving oil resources. NEC's newest bioplastic has heat diffusion capabilities equivalent to that of stainless steel.
Using a Polylactic acid base which is a bioplastic that has low heat and impact resistance, NEC added carbon fibers, a unique binding agent, fluidizer, and reinforcement materials to improve thermal conductivity and durability. Other Polylactic based bioplastics NEC has developed include a flame retardant bioplastic and a bioplastic with shape memory.
Currently the Shape Memory bioplastic and the flame retardant bioplastic are being used in products, but NEC plans to market the high thermal conductivity bioplastic in the near future.
More products need to be made of bioplastics to help prevent problems like the Eastern Pacific Garbage Patch from getting worst.
