You know that spinning metal desk sculpture on Pepper Potts' desk in Iron Man 2? Yeah, we got it.

There is a magnet in the longer of the two tubes, and an electro-magnet in the base. Every time the magnet passes the base, the electromagnet gives it a little boost to keep it moving indefinitely. There's no such thing as perpetual motion.

And potatoes make french fries and vodka. Clearly the superior entity.

An electromagnet is only copper wire creating a magnetic field with power from a battery. Why not rip out the electromagnet and replace it with a real magnet? Problem Solved!

Perpetual refers to endless, so as long as it keeps moving, it is perpetual motion, which can be done with real magnets, not electromagnets.

why have a electromagnet when you can have a permanent magnet so it doesnt need batteries?

I read your comment and thought about it... 'where was it going to get the power for the electromagnet?'... and sure enough, reading the specs, it comes with 4xAA batteries... this devise seems a lot less amazing now.

"This is crazy this is like a ferris wheel." I think that he's comparing this sculpture with the Rejected ThinkGeek Product # 443.
