I visited the Big Qualicum Fish Hatchery on September 24, 2009 to see the Salmon spawning. The Big Qualicum River flows from its source at Horne Lake approximately 11 km (7 mi) to the Strait of Georgia. If A visit to the hatchery during the fall allows you to see spawners as they ascend the fish ladder leading to the holding ponds. Some of these fish will be held in ponds to provide brood stock for the hatchery program. Others will be returned to the river to spawn naturally. Other fish are diverted to cages and dumped into plastic bins and provide an important source of fish for the native food-fish program . While I was there a large salmon flopped out of a bin and landed at my feet. I told one of the guys working there that the fish wanted to come home with me, he did not agree.
