A while back we pondered what would happen if your hand was hit by the Large Hadron Collider's proton beam - this time we're asking the people who work there! Our original video is at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NMqPT...

Clearly there is only one thing to do - make a ballistics jell hand, put it in there and see what happens. I mean, we deserve an answer for our tax dollar funding, right?

Not even relatively possible. Considering this takes place deep underground in a facility that is absolutely massive with machines that would blow your mind, all used for the sake of benefiting mankind. No. Just no.

Zoom the camera out a bit, Brady, you're too close to peoples faces.

Sounds like something the Mythbusters would do.

Look up Anatoli Bugorski. He actually DID get his body in front of a proton beam from a particle accelerator in 1978. His face, in fact. He survived.

They often reform as other particles. In fact, they can form many different combinations, so long as charge and mass (and a couple other less talked about things) are the same after the collision as before. Particles change forms all the time, actually... photons are generated from pure energy and emitted from electrons and other particles, or neutrons sometimes decay into a proton, an electron, and a neutrino, for example.

Its cheaper to make thermo-nuclear weapons than build and run LHC's.

Destroying protons is equitable to destroying rocks, one can sympathize.
"What's in here?" "I dunno, smash it open." The difference being we physicists get to utilize the greatest scientific instruments in all of human history, whereas rock people use hammers and brushes. I mean geologists...

Is it really a good idea to be destroying protons?
Do the particles reform into protons or is it lost forever as energy or darkmatter?

There would be far cheaper and nastier weapons. A missile that could continuously accelerate at a few Gs till it hit sub-relativistic speeds would be a destroyer of worlds at a far cheaper price.

Is this a similar question to "stick your finger in that vortex 6000 rpm fan over there and see what happens" ?
