  • @infinitecmdz I also read about HMM, and it seems to be quite robust. I think that I will have to have a look at that at one moment in my research :)

  • @darkPaillasson There were couple of youtube videos and projects that i had seen where machine learning was using(hidden markov models) to detect the orientation of the palm with a couple of fingers in all cases. Those ideas seem to be robust.

  • @infinitecmdz Ah yes ! I see it. Of course Kinect is unable to detect this kind of gesture, but with some interpolation and memorization, it is still possible to detect where the hand is pointing. It is not implemented in my app, but it is feasible.

  • @darkPaillasson I think kinect gives you roughly the center point of your palm... So if the palm was pointing towards kinect, then there is less area of the palm that kinect can actually detect..is it not? I might be wrong, it's been a while since i played with kinect..I presume you're using openni? and using an IR generator? Any video to show this?

  • @infinitecmdz I don't have any problem when my hands are oriented towards the kinect. Why would you expect such a problem ?

  • @darkPaillasson

This wouldnt work well if you had your palm oriented towards the kinect..right? like your fingertips pointing towards the camera and then closing and openning palm.

  • @infinitecmdz Hi, I use OpencCV library and NITE framework. Nite gives me a 3D point which refers to the position of the hand in metric space. Then I take all 3D points of the kinect that are at most at r distance from this point (r is a threshold value where 20cm works fine). Then I calculate a oriented bounding box with all the found points and compute area and orientation to know wether the hand is opened or closed. Hope that helps ;-)

  • excellent work!! how do you detect palm close and open?
