Things happened differently. Jimmy wasn't the one to be shot and Castiel didn't come back in time. This caused Jimmy to lose everything he had left in life and the Winchesters took him under their wing. Jimmy traveled with them for three weeks until he heard about a crossroad demon outside of the town they were staying in.
He ran off to make a deal and, being the man he was, Jimmy asked for nothing more but his family to be alive and well. He got this in exchange for his soul, which was to be collected in twenty four hours. He spent his last moments with his family before he was dragged to Hell. Castiel took up a new vessel while Jimmy was in Hell for a very short time: his twin brother Steven.
