GLOBALMAXIM: 15 March 2011 -- UNTV: United Nations, New York -- The US premiere of the film "Miral" was held tonight (14 March) at the UN General Assembly Hall with diplomats, UN officials and many celebrities in attendance.

The film, from acclaimed artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel, brings to the screen the visceral, first-person diary of a young girl growing up in East Jerusalem as she confronts the effects of the political turmoil on her life.

The screenplay was written by Rula Jebreal based on her own novel. She is a Palestinian journalist and broadcaster born in East Jerusalem to a father working in the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Jebreal told UNifeed that she has always wanted to tell stories about "how civil society, especially women" live under the Israeli - Palestinian conflict.

She said that she finds it fitting that the film is being premiered at the United Nations an organization dedicated "to promoting peace, education and love, which is the main things that I advocate everyday in my life and I advocate in the story".

Jebreal added that the story is "about human beings, about respect, and about creating a bridge between people" and, commenting on some negative criticism received by the film, she said that "peace is not against somebody; peace is actually a value for all of us."

The film features rare documentary footage, including from the UN archives. It recounts and analyses the Middle East conflict as processed in the United Nations over the decades, recounting UN resolutions and other proceedings

Schnabel pieces together momentary fragments of Miral's world to create a raw, moving, poetic portrait of a woman whose small, personal story is inextricably woven into the bigger history unfolding all around her.

The filmmaker said that the UN "is a perfect platform for this movie, because it is about listening to the other side, a side that I was not on"

He added that "the movie can be poetic and educational at the same time."

Legendary actor Vanessa Redgrave explained her role in the film and pointed out that this is "a real story. It is Rula's story."

Schnabel first received international attention as a visual artist in the 1980 for his "plate paintings", large-scale paintings set on broken ceramic plates.

He later went on to direct films such as Basquiat and Before Night Falls. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly earned him the award for best director at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, the Golden Globe for best director, the Independent Spirit Award for best director, and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director.

For the first time the United Nations General Assembly Hall was equipped with the latest technology to serve as the venue for a film premiere.
