This is Léo, an 8½ years old domestic cat.

He started coughing this way about 5 years ago, twice a month. Since he has long an thick fur (he's freshly shaved in this video) I assumed he was having a hard time passing an hair ball. Only with time, he started coughing more and more, and I started massaging him between his front paws when it was happening. By doing so, he would stop coughing every time, reinforcing my idea that it was an hair ball. But since about a month he coughs like this several times a day and massaging him doesn't help him anymore. I became very concerned and told my vet about it last week when I went for his haircut. She is convinced my cat has feline asthma, since he coughs without throwing up any hair ball, and doesn't cough when an hair ball pops out. I searched for videos on Youtube and based on what I've seen, I would most likely agree with her. Léo is having an appointment with her today for x-rays to confirm this diagnosis and to see which medication could help him. I recorded this video to show her Léo's main symptom, wishing she'll be able to help my kitty cat!

Besides coughing, Léo is living a very happy and spoiled life, naps under the sun, eats well, chases bugs :P and purrrs all day long. He acts normally and I'm sure with proper medication he'll get better very quickly. It's such a relief to know he won't have to go through this for much longer now!

  • Very well, his asthma is under control with cortisone pills and he has about 1-2 very small crisis per month, instead of 8-10 big ones per day. :)

  • Update! Léo is on medication (cortisone) since 5 days now. Since day 1, his attacks went from 5-6 minutes crisis, 8-12 times a day, to less than 30 seconds crisis, 1-2 times a day. He event spent more than 30 hours without any crisis! :)
