From Zermatt .....the MATTERHORN.

A tour of the Italian Lakes Garda, Como and Maggiore also provided the opportunity to travel into the Swiss mountain resort of Zermatt from where a 40-minute mountain train journey through aromatic Stone Pine and Larch, led to the 3089m high station of Gornergrat and impressive views of perhaps the most familiar mountain in the European Alps and Switzerland's most famous landmark, the mighty 4,478m Matterhorn.

Switzerland's highest open-air station on the Gornergrat Bahn electric railway opened for business in 1898, hauling tourists from Zermatt to this scenic platform with such impressive views of the mountain that derives its name from the German words 'Matte', translating to valley or meadow, and 'Horn' which means peak. With time to spend at Lake Lugano or just to wander around the modern, trendy and stylish city, the tour included a visit to a site of one of Switzerland's most famous exports at the Caslano chocolate factory!

  • Beautiful. As I remember seeing the mountain. Went last summer. It was a trip to remember forever.

  • Beautiful photos of a beautiful town and country side not to mention the Matterhorn. The Matterhorn is my favorite mountain to look at and read about. I was never a climber, and my hat is off to those who have climbed her. Thanks!! Charlie..

  • Where's the shot of the Abominable Snowman? :(

  • The way it is in Zermatt. Beautiful trip to go on if you can.

  • top 6 for it's technical difficulty and rock fall strewn approaches.

  • I went to Zermatt and went to the top of Mini Matterhorn (right next to the matterhorn) in 3 different cable cars. The view was fantastic. Too bad it was cloudy on that day though.
