Regarded as the Oscars of surfing, the BILLABONG XXL AWARDS recognize the athletes who ride the biggest and best waves over the last year everywhere in the world, based on the photographic evidence. The ninth-annual event hands out over $130,000 in cash prizes in an array of categories including the Ride of the Year, the XXL Biggest Wave, Monster Paddle and Monster Tube. You can keep telling yourself that all you want but it wont make it true, you sound like one of those pretend purists with a chip on their shoulder. I have run into the type before, they are generally all just ego, think they are better than they really are and if they could would be surfing for a living as well.

Its not hard to just enjoy your surfing and leave it at that with respect to those who are good enough to make a life from it.

@petecabrina Not many people athletes risk life every time they participate. Race car drivers and BIG wave surfers do. If they make a mistake there isn't a time out or stop of play it just them and do they live or die.

@parrrtypants there may have been bigger swells but did you pull into a 30ft barrel and let the lip miss you by a foot....no. did you get air off an inner lip and ride out in 30ft...no. did you manage to surf though a 30ft blow out....no. or maybe you managed to paddle into a ribbed 30 footer on an unleaded board and not be bucked off by the ridges....no you didnt.

@parrrtypants haha, good one! you paddled bigger waves on maui last year!?! granted those shippies waves aren't massive (on the big wave scale), but the amount of skill it takes to ride such a sketchy, heavy stairway to hell is totally worthy of nomination.
