www.abudhabifilmfestival.ae | Slackistan is a colorful, funny and poignant snapshot of (postponed) life among the American-educated, middle-class kids of Islamabad -- "the city that always sleeps." It might be the first movie of its kind -- a youth-oriented slice-of-life about boredom in sunny suburban Pakistan. Hasan -- clearly director Hammad Khan's alter ego -- is a moody aspiring filmmaker stuck bumming around with a group of directionless hipsters a year after university. They cruise the preplanned streets of the federal capital. They party. They certainly don't work. Mostly, they hang out at fast-food restaurants and wonder what's next.
Hasan searches for inspiration to make films, but finds none -- for one thing, there is not a single cinema in town. He spends his days flirting with the gorgeous but enigmatic Aisha. Among his friends, he is the most pained by the emptiness of the scene and the absurdity of being a bored suburbanite in a troubled nation. His angst is genuine, and the film makes pointed references to Pakistan's poverty and its tarnished image in the world.
But for all the ennui and frustration, Khan makes his prefab, postmodern hometown look fun. He gets the tone just right, from the Urdlish slang of the dialogue to the all- Pakistani alt-rock soundtrack. The young actors turn in unassuming, appealing performances; Khan's bright, busy style finds both beauty and amusing contradictions. It's somehow welcome to find that disaffected youth are much the same all over.
I MEAN JUST... WHAT THE FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK?
honestly is this what our quide referred to as "our national treasure"? using crap language and fake accent? and dad's telling servants to make "drinks" infront of kids? what are the promoting? is this what Pakistan is like now with people like this and movies like these? ew I'm dreading going there. Looks like it's definitely not the country you would want to raise you kids. Yes, agreeable this girl is pretty but is that all? big deal grr nvm

It's a great shame that on one side the world is watching 1 extreme that is "Taliban", who slaughter people, kill people, burn school for their personal motives, and now there is a another extreme who wants to represent Pakistan "Liberal Talibans" like Hammad Khan, such people thinks that progress lies in drinking, dating, doing parties despite the terror attacks on their city, moderates Muslims r still alive
