  • Kingneb, just curious. How do these locomotives "look" extremely inefficient? They're equipped with 3,000 hp 645 series diesel powerplants from GM-EMD. They had the horsepower, speed, and produced plenty of electrical power to run these commuter trains on time. With all the "stop and go" punishment, the F40Cs proved to tougher and more durable than the modern MP series replacements. Are you judging a book by its cover?

  • bravo, out here in NJ, the 40 year old GP40s and 30 year old F40s are proving much more reliable than the new PL42's that were supposed to replace them. it's the over dependence on computers, not the fine 710 series powerplant.
